WILLMAR — The Minnewaska boys soccer team avenged a regular-season loss to Central Minnesota Christian at just the right time Thursday — the Section 8A-East playoffs.

Minnewaska beat CMCS, 3-2.

The Lakers were the third seed. CMCS was the second seed. The match was played at a neutral site, Community Christian School.

The teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.

Minnewaska (9-5) plays St. Cloud Cathedral at 11 a.m. Saturday at Whitney Field in St. Cloud. Cathedral, the top seed in 8A-East, beat St. John’s Prep 1-0 on Thursday.

Cathedral beat Minnewaska 4-0 and 5-1 during the regular season. Both teams are members of the Granite Ridge Conference.

CMCS finishes the season with a 7-7 record.

In Section 8A-West, Pelican Rapids (No. 1 West) beat Crookston (No. 4 West), 8-0. Hillcrest Lutheran (No. 2 West) beat Fergus Falls (No. 3 West), 8-1. Pelican Rapids is host to Hillcrest Lutheran at 1 p.m. Saturday for the 8A-West championship.

The section final is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sauk Centre High School. At stake is a berth in the state tournament.
