Litchfield softball opens 5AA with victory

LITCHFIELD—Jasmin Estrada homered, doubled and drove in two runs and Kristin Jones had two hits, including a double, drove in two runs and scored three times as Litchfield thumped Brooklyn Center 15-0 in the first round of the Section 5AA playoffs on Monday.

Litchfield's Avery Stilwell also had a hit and drove in two runs and Sydney Braaten had two hits and an RBI.

The Dragons' Maddy Larson allowed just two hits over four innings, walking two and striking out four.

The Dragons advanced to play the Providence Academy and Maranatha Academy winner in a second-round game at 4:30 p.m. today in Litchfield.

Royalton 9, Paynesville 5

Royalton ended Paynesville's season with a 9-5 win in the Section 6AA opener Monday.

Royalton scored five runs in the opening two innings and added three in the fourth inning to keep the lead.

Emily Malikowski went 3-for-3 with four runs scored and allowed only three hits from the pitching rubber to earn the win and advance.

Willmar's Fischer triplets and the doubles pair of Ryan Ackerman and Ben Hisken kept their state tournament hopes alive Monday afternoon, advancing out of the Section 8AA South sub-section.

Hunter and Peyton Fischer won the doubles portion of the tournament, winning all three matches they played in. They opened up with a 6-1, 6-3 win and followed that up with a marathon match against St. Cloud Tech's Kevin Heller and Richard Zimring. The Fischers topped the three-seed with a 6-7 (3-7), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) win. They won the championship against top-seeded Nick Portz and Scott Kippley of St. Cloud Tech 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

Will Fischer will also advance after taking second in the singles portion of the tournament. Fischer won his opening match of the tournament as the No. 2 seed 6-3, 7-5 against St. Cloud Tech's Steven Miller and followed that up with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win against Becker's Brady Gruenhagen. Top-ranked Jacob Lukkarila of Becker defeated Fischer 6-4, 6-0 in the championship.

Ryan Ackerman and Ben Hisken took a first round bye as the No. 5 seed, won their first match 6-2, 6-3 against Becker's Caleb Quernemoen and Jordan Ulbrich. They lost to Portz and Kippley 6-4, 6-0 and lost to Heller and Zimring in the third-place match 6-3, 6-2 to take fourth place.

Willmar's Rafael Zelaya lost his opening match against Big Lake's Zach Gibis 6-1, 6-4.

YME 4, Montevideo 3

Yellow Medicine East utilized a marathon three-set match at No. 1 doubles to edge Montevideo in the Section 3A tennis tournament.

Brandon Olson and Jakob Pringle narrowly defeated David Moreno and Calvin Anderson 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (8-6) to give the Sting the win.

YME will now move on to play top-seeded Luverne Wednesday in Redwood Falls.

DC Charger Invite

Nicole Nelson claimed medalist honors shooting an 86 and Annandale edged Litchfield by three shots at the Dassel-Cokato Charger Invite on Monday at Albion Ridges in Annandale.

Nelson finished a stroke ahead of Litchfield's Livia Behnke. The Dragons' Vaida Behnke was fifth with an 89.
