MURDOCK - Dawson-Boyd put a scare into top-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg in the top of the first inning.
With a runner on, the Fighting Saints could only watch the ball sail over the fence when the Blackjacks' Mary Bothun crushed a two-run home run to left field.
D-B had a big bat. But KMS responded with a barrage of bats.
Finishing with 14 hits on the day, the Saints put up seven runs in the bottom of the first to set the tone in a 10-4 victory in Section 3A-North play Thursday in Murdock.
"I was really happy with how the girls responded after (Bothun) got that homer," said KMS head coach Eileen Suter. "Then with two outs (in the first), we were still hitting the ball well. ... We had some bleeders that fell, too, so we had some luck on our side."
Mallory Rudningen and Morgan Lesteberg both wielded big bats against the Blackjacks with both going 3-for-4. Rudningen had a double and drove in a pair of runs while Lesteberg finished with an RBI. Katie Krieger went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Maret Gjerde went 2-for-4.
On the rubber, Claire Hauge was the winning pitcher after a complete-game outing. She had three strikeouts with seven hits and one walk allowed.
Bothun went 3-for-4 and also took the loss with three strikeouts over six innings. Kaia Jordahl also drove in a run for D-B, going 1-for-4.
Advancing in the winner's bracket, KMS will square off with Wabasso in the next round, which is set for 12:15 p.m. Saturday in Marshall. Dawson-Boyd will look to keep its season alive in the loser's bracket against Murray County Central at 10:45 a.m. Saturday in Marshall.

Fifteen Renville County West players stepped into the batter's box. And Katie Krieger sat them all down in short order.
In an opening-round game in the Section 3A-North tournament, the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg senior threw a perfect game, striking out eight in the Fighting Saints' 15-0 win over the Jaguars in five innings. At the plate, she was 2-for-2 with a pair of runs and an RBI.
It was Krieger's second perfect game in 10 days. She was also perfect in a win over Lakeview on May 13.
"I think it helped a lot (on Thursday). It got Katie really fired up," said Saints head coach Eileen Suter. "She's kind of our leader on the field."
Maret Gjerde and Haylee Johnson both had two hits, with Johnson picking up a triple with three RBIs and a pair of runs. Mallory Rudningen was 1-for-2 with four RBIs and two runs.
Kaylee Flom took the loss for RCW after giving up seven runs in two innings.
