Prep Softball: Wollschlager leads Eagles to 3A-North wins

MADISON — Haley Wollschlager worked two complete games and Lac qui Parle Valley picked up a pair of Section 3A-North victories on Thursday at LQPV High School.

The Eagles opened the day with a 4-1 win over Lakeview and then defeated MACCRAY 7-2, thanks in part to Wollschlager's pitching and a five-run first inning.

A balanced offensive attack was key against MACCRAY, Cassidie Olson had two hits and drove in three runs and Macie Lund, Lindsey Kranz, Sidney Gerdes all had two hits and drove in runs.

Wollschlager allowed two runs on six hits and struck out nine to get the win.

MACCRAY's Ashley Levitz-Mickel had two hits and Abi Pieper and Celena Jenkins had hits and scored the Wolverines' runs.

Against Lakeview, Wollschlager allowed a run on seven hits and struck out seven.

LQPV's Lindsey Kranz had two hits and drove in two runs and Ashton Molden had a double among her two hits and scored twice.

MACCRAY 16, BOLD 4

MACCRAY struck early and capped off its Section 3A-North win with an eight-run fourth inning against BOLD on Thursday at Lac qui Parle Valley High School.

The Wolverines' Ashley Levitz-Mickel had three hits and drove in two runs, Sage Mecker had three hits, stole three bases and scored three runs, and Alison Koenen doubled twice and drove in three runs.

Jaimi Heida, Kate Hultgren and Celena Jenkins all had two hits and drove in runs and Abi Pieper tripled and drove in three runs. Heida allowed just one earned run and struck out three to get the win.

BOLD's Devyn O'Halloran doubled and drove in a run and Kilee Elfering had two hits.

Monticello 3,

Willmar 2

Hailey Beilke led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run to left field and Monticello ended Willmar's season in the Section 5AAA playoffs on Thursday.

Losing pitcher Mackenzie Jones' RBI double in the top of the eighth inning put the Cardinals up 2-1 but the Magic countered with a run in the bottom of the inning on Chloe Hinz' run-scoring single.

"I'm proud of the girls," Willmar head coach Shannon Cayler said. "It was as even a game as we've played all year. It was quite intense but our girls kept pushing through and showed a lot of team character. There were a lot of kids who made things happen."

Willmar's Bentley Sjoberg and Ashley Prahl both had two hits. Despite talking the loss, Jones allowed just one earned run, a walk and she struck out 10.

The Cardinals wrapped their season 10-12.

Mackenzie Jones worked a strong game and Sadie Raitz drove in one of Willmar's three runs in the first three innings as Willmar opened Thursday's Section 5AAA playoffs with a win over St. Cloud Apollo.

Jones worked 6-1/3 innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while striking out 11.

NLS 7, M/C 2

A four-run top of the sixth inning broke a tied ball game open for New London-Spicer as the third-seeded Wildcats defeated second-seeded Minneota/Canby 7-2 in the second round of the Section 3AA-North playoffs Thursday in Minneota.

Katelyn nordmeyer was 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the seventh as well as a double, two runs and an RBI. Presley Arndt_Callenius also had a pair of hits with an RBI.

Ashlyn Leindecker was the winning pitcher with five strikeouts while holding the Vikings to just three hits in a complete-game effort. She was also 1-for-2 at the plate with a double and two RBIs.

At 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Marshall, NLS will square off with the south's top seed, Pipestone.

NLS 4, Benson 2

New London-Spicer managed to fend off a game Benson squad in the opening round of the Section 3AA-North tournament on Thursday, 4-2.

Katelyn Nordmeyer drove in three of the Wildcats' four runs, going 2-for-3 with a double. Mackenzie Rich and Ari Lindquist both had a hit, with Lindquist scoring a run in the victory.

Kaitlyn Berreau had a double and two RBIs for the Braves while Ellie Moesenthin led the team in hits, going 2-for-4.

Ashlyn Leindecker had two strikeouts and two walks in a complete-game win for NLS. Cally Miller took the loss for Benson after six innings of work.

The Braves wrap up the spring with a 5-12 record.

Despite out-hitting Minneota/Canby, the Vikings were able to knock Montevideo out of the Section 3AA-North playoffs with a 9-3 opening-round win Thursday in Minneota.

Noelle Sulflow was 3-for-5 with a run for the Thunder Hawks. Following her was Lexi Brockmoller, who hit a two-out solo home run in the first inning. Megan Anderson finished 1-for-3 with a run while being hit with the loss after tossing four innings.

Montevideo finished the 2019 season with a 4-13 record.

With a seven-RBI effort from Katelyn Cruze, Litchfield kept its season alive with a 17-6 win in the Section 5AA loser's bracket on Thursday.

Cruze, who went 2-for-3, had a grand slam in the bottom of the second inning that gave the Dragons an 8-1 lead. She also had a two-run double in the fourth.

Janessa Olson also had two hits, going 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBi and a stolen base.

Litchfield knotted the game in the top of the fourth inning but Maple Lake scored single runs in the fourth and fifth to edge the Dragons on Thursday.

Litchfield's Avery Stilwell and Katelyn Cruze both hit home runs, with Cruze collecting two hits and two RBIs. Emma DeWolf had a hit and drove in a run.
