MURDOCK — It has been a rocky start to the season for the Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg softball team.

The Fighting Saints finally got their first two games of the season in Thursday, beating Dawson-Boyd 21-1 and 19-0. Both games were ended after four innings.

KMS senior right-hander Lauren Krieger tossed back-to-back no-hitters. All things considered, KMS head coach Eileen Suter was more than pleased.

“We were down to 10 players,” Suter said. “Considering we had three JVers out there, it was very good.”

Because of pandemic protocols, all the other players in the program had to sit out because of potential exposure to COVID-19.

“We had to borrow some seventh-graders so we could have a JV,” Suter said.

Suter said 18 of the 39 players in the program practiced Wednesday. The rest were all quarantined.

Krieger struck out six and walked one, allowing one unearned run. In the second game, she struck out one and walked none.

“She’s the most consistent pitcher I have,” Suter said. “Our defense played great. That’s what made it special. I had my center fielder catching and my shortstop out. The way our defense played, it was amazing.”
