ST. CLOUD — The Willmar softball team improved to 4-6 following a Central Lakes Conference sweep of St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday.

A four-run top of the seventh propelled the Cardinals to a 16-13 Game 1 victory. In Game 2, Willmar held the Eagles off the board through the final three innings to leave an 8-7 winner.

Coming up with 13 hits in the opener, the Cardinals were led offensively by Ashley Pitzen and Zoe Schroeder. Pitzen was 3-for-4 with four runs, three stolen bases and a pair of RBIs while Schroeder went 3-for-4 with a double, four runs, two stolen bases and an RBI. Bentley Sjoberg added two hits and two RBIs in the Game 1 victory. Lily Reed was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Reed’s success carried over to the batter’s box in Game 2 as she led the Cardinals’ offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases. Carlie Berskow went 1-for-2 with two runs and a stolen base while also getting the win after four innings of work in the circle.

Willmar returns home on Thursday, hosting Sartell for a doubleheader at Willmar High School. Game 1 is set to begin at 4 p.m.

An error at third base on a grounder by Litchfield’s Avery Stilwell allowed Grace Braaten to reach home and score the winning run in the Dragons’ Wright County Conference victory at Litchfield.

Taylor Draeger threw a complete-game victory for Litchfield, striking out 12. On offense, Emma DeWolf was 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base.

Paynesville’s Michaela Roberg had a fine birthday present Tuesday. The 17-year-old went 3-for-5 with a double, six runs scored and four RBI in Paynesville’s victory over Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City at Grove City.

She helped lead the Bulldogs, who had 15 hits. Lynzee Wander went 3-for-5 with three runs, seven RBI, a triple and a home run.

Paynesville (6-4) has a doubleheader Thursday at Maple Lake.
