Stars' surge in second period sinks Cards

WILLMAR -- Sam Mugge scored two goals and assisted on another, Alyssa Meed added a goal and assist, and River Lakes pulled away from Willmar in the second period Tuesday on their way to a 4-2 Central Lakes Conference win.

WILLMAR - Sam Mugge scored two goals and assisted on another, Alyssa Meed added a goal and assist, and River Lakes pulled away from Willmar in the second period Tuesday on their way to a 4-2 Central Lakes Conference win.

Willmar jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind goals from its first line. Riley Schneider and Kierra Miller scored the two goals, and both assisted on the other. Jordan Sankey had secondary assists for both goals.

Schneider’s goal came on the power play just under three minutes into the game.

But River Lakes scored three goals within barely 10 minutes in the second period, including two on the power play, and then Mugge’s second goal of the game sealed the win in the third.

Jordyn Tomaszewski stopped 26 out of 28 shots for a solid performance in goal for the Stars, and Savana Knutson made 27 saves for the Cards.

River Lakes hosts Detroit Lakes on Friday, while Willmar will travel to Sartell on Thursday to play Sartell/Sauk Rapids.
