Stingers capitalize on Express errors

Also, BOLD Legion downs Albany, earns state trip

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — Capitalizing on Eau Claire’s miscues, Willmar picked up a third-straight win with a 5-2 victory in Northwoods League play Monday.

The Stingers’ first two runs came via errors when Sam Baier crossed home in the top of the third inning, followed by Brennan McKenzie in the fifth. Then in the top of the seventh, Baier and Branden Boissiere moved into scoring position after a wild pitch, setting McKenzie up with a two-run double to boost Willmar’s lead to 4-1. Boissiere added an insurance run in the top of the ninth.

Polo Portela remains undefeated with a win, moving his record to 7-0. Portela went five innings, allowing one run on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts. He is currently second in the Northwoods League with a 1.35 ERA.

Bryant Claunch threw two scoreless innings, and Aldo Fernandez picked up the save after tossing a pair of innings.

McKenzie was the Stingers’ big bat, going 4-for-5 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored. Chase Stanke finished 2-for-5, and Casey Dykstra hit for a double in the victory.

Willmar and Eau Claire will play a doubleheader on Tuesday, with Game 1 pegged for a 1:05 p.m. start. Game 2 is set to take place at 7:05 p.m.

Central Sub-State

BOLD 2, Albany 1

Matt Moorse and Jordan Sagedahl held Albany down after the third inning and Jack Peppel and Aidan Elfering drove in runs as the BOLD Legion team earned a spot in the Division 2 state tournament with a win in the deciding Central Sub-State game on Monday in St. Martin.

On Saturday, BOLD defeated Albany in the first game of the best-of-three series, but Albany rallied for a 6-1 win to force Game 3, which was postponed on Sunday.

Elfering had a single and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly, and Peppel also drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Moorse started and worked five innings to get the win. He allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five. Sagedahl, who also had two hits, pitched hitless ball over the final two innings.

BOLD opens the District 2 state tournament at 10 a.m. Friday in Ely.

Cole Christensen five-hit Starbuck as Raymond won a Region 4C playoff game on Monday. The game was rained out on Sunday.

Christensen walked one and struck out seven.

John Sawatzky drove in two runs and Jordan Smith had two hits and scored twice.

Bird Island 17, Sacred Heart 2

Dylan Gass and Trevor Nissen both hit home runs in the third inning, leading a 17-hit output for the Bullfrogs in a 17-2 victory over Sacred Heart Monday in the Region 4C playoffs.

Nissen belted a three-run home run, finishing the game 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs. Gass had a solo homer as part of a 1-for-3 outing.

Shawn Dollerschell was 4-for-4 with a double and five RBIs and Ben Steffel was 3-for-4 with a double and three runs for Bird Island.

Logan Nissen picked up the win for the Bullfrogs, striking out 10 over five innings.

Ryan Hebrink, Shane Freiborg and Derik Johnson each had hits for the Saints.
