WILLMAR - The Willmar Stingers coaching staff will have a familiar face with former player Carlos Leyva returning as an assistant coach to field manager Matt Hollod.
Leyva, who played at Cal State Dominguez Hills, played for the Stingers in their inaugural 2010 season when he hit .323 and a team-record 29 stolen bases.
He was selected in the 32nd round of the MLB draft in 2011 by the New York Mets and spent one season with Mets’ affiliates Kingsport Mets and Brooklyn Cyclones.
Rounding out the Stingers’ coaching staff is San Diego Mesa’s Steve Sanchez, returning for his second season in Willmar, and newcomer PJ McIntee, an assistant coach at Southeastern Community College in West Burlington, Iowa.
McIntee, a native of Randolph, Minn., played his college ball at Bemidji State from 2006-09 and was an assistant coach for the Beavers for two seasons.

“I am excited to have this group of guys joining the coaching staff,” Hollod said. “Each of these guys bring a unique perspective and coaching style that will provide our players some valuable experience to learn from.”
Tyler Shepple, who served as pitching coach for the Stingers’ first three seasons, will not be returning.

Eagles’ teammate and current Stinger Michael Suchy was named the Player of the Week for May 6, with a nearly identical line of a .455 average, 3 homers and 7 RBIs.
