MINNEAPOLIS — Willmar sophomore Ava Brogren finished 14th out of 20 swimmers competing in the 100-yard breaststroke during the second day of Class A girls state swimming and diving championships Friday afternoon from the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
Trying to become the first Cardinal swimmer to earn a medal since Aylcia Holwerda did so in the same event in 2014, Brogren posted a preliminary time of 1 minute, 9.39 seconds to earn a spot in the consolation final. Richfield senior and top seed Hannah Hintermeister put up the fastest time of the event, clocking in at 1:05.02.
Class A championship and consolation finals will begin at noon Saturday from the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, which is located on the University of Minnesota campus.

Behind 19 points from sophomore guard Parker Schwinghammer, Ridgewater captured its second win in a row with a road victory against Mayville State J.V. late Thursday.
Draining four of the teams seven 3-pointers, Schwinghammer scored 14 of his 19 points in the second half.
Ten players entered the scoring column for the Warriors. Sophomore guard Faizon Stephens was only other Ridgewater player in double figures with 11 points.
The Warriors will be back on the road next week, as they will take on North Dakota State College of Science 7:30 p.m. at Tuesday from Wahpeton, N.D..
