WILLMAR — While Willmar won eight events, Melrose was able to leave Willmar High School with the non-conference victory.
“Exciting meet,” said Cardinals head coach Carl Shuldes. “We just couldn’t find those extra couple of points that we needed.”
Cardinals sophomore Shelby Reed was a two-time winner on Tuesday, taking first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.04 seconds) and 100 freestyle (58.18).
Kylie Portiin won the diving competition with a score of 164.15. Also winning for Willmar were: Cate Brogren (200 freestyle, 2:13.07); Aubrey Schueler (100 butterfly, 1:08.63); and Ava Brogren (100 backstroke, 1:04.58).
The Cardinals had a 1-2 finish in the 200 freestyle relay, with the quartet of Reed, Grace Bjur, Noelle Becker and Cate Brogren winning at 1:48.47. The 400 freestyle relay team of Reed, Schueler, Cate Brogren and Ava Brogren won at 3:54.74.
Willmar will compete in the Central Lakes Conference championship meet on Saturday, Oct. 30 at Sartell.
