WILLMAR - The Men’s Soccer League that endured weekly rainouts in June wrapped up its season with a tense, well-played championship game on a partly-sunny Sunday afternoon before an estimated crowd of 150 football fans at the Roosevelt pitch.
The final was tied 1-1 at the split but Atletico de Yojoa scored three times in the second half to win going away 4-2 against Athletico Madrid. Each team had won two playoff games to reach the championship.
Rene Ramirez scored the first two goals for de Yojoa, which is a small town in Honduras where all of its players were born. Madrid striker Alfredo Corral’s second goal of the contest tied the score 2-2 in the second half. Jorge Kafati’s header off a corner kick proved the game-winner for De Yojoa and Mauricio Torres soon added insurance. Marco Limon was in the de Yojoa goal.
The de Yojoa win evened the score with Team Madrid, which won 3-1 in the regular-season. The 18-team Sunday men’s league is supervised by Willmar Community Education and Recreation.
