MINNEAPOLIS — The Litchfield girls tennis team won its opening-round matchup of the Class A state tournament 4-3 against Pine City on Tuesday afternoon at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center.
With all three doubles matches going to three sets, Litchfield got wins from their No. 2 and No. 3 pairs.
At No. 2 doubles, Litchfield senior Taylor Draeger and sophomore Olivia Olson held off Claire Emmons and Brenna Youngbauer 7-6, 2-6, 6-2. Then at No. 3, the junior duo of Kaitlyn Palmer and Sophie Stilwell came back from a first-set loss to beat Malia Mikyska and Rhaya Merrick 5-7, 6-0, 6-2.
It was Litchfield's younger players that helped split singles play. At No. 3, freshman Karlee Prahl defeated Brooke Boland 6-2, 6-3. Then at No. 4, seventh-grader Isla Dille won in three sets against Lena Roubinek 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
Coming into the match, Pine City was ranked third in Class A while Litchfield was fourth.
Litchfield will face Providence Academy at 10 a.m. Wednesday back at the Reed-Sweatt Family Tennis Center. Providence Academy beat Crookston 5-2. In other quarterfinal matches, Fairmont beat Morris/Chokio-Alberta 7-0 and Breck defeated Rochester Lourdes 5-2. Fairmont and Breck play in Wednesday's other semifinal.
In other Class A play:
- Fairmont defeated Morris/Chokio-Alberta/West Central Area 7-0 in the opening match.
- Breck beat Rochester Lourdes 5-2. Breck is the top-rated team in Class A while Rochester Lourdes is second.
