The Alexandria Blue Anchors have played their last game in the Northwoods League.
The team made it official this week in announcing the decision. The Blue Anchors changed ownership before the 2013 season and went from the Alexandria Beetles to the Blue Anchors at the start of that summer.
The Anchors played for three years before deciding it was time to withdraw from the league after years of struggling to try and break even financially as both the Beetles and Blue Anchors. Alexandria has had a team in the NWL since 2001.
“The decision always comes down to it’s a business and ultimately we’re trying to break even or make money at it,” part-owner Shane Schmidt said on Wednesday. “You can’t do it just to be charitable, and so as you’re going through this you’re hoping to put it together so you can turn it around and make some money at it. It’s not that. It doesn’t make money.”
