The Insider: Four area teams ranked in preseason cross country polls

Both of Willmar's cross country teams, the Montevideo boys and the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls are all ranked in the State Coaches Association Preseason Polls.

Both of Willmar’s cross country teams, the Montevideo boys and the Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd girls are all ranked in the State Coaches Association Preseason Polls.

In Class AA, the Cardinal girls are No. 4 and the boys are tied for No. 12. LQPV/DB is No. 4 in girls Class A and Montevideo is No. 6 in boys Class A.

Individually, Montevideo junior Kurt TeBeest is No. 2 and Willmar senior Nadir Yusuf is No. 6. At last year’s state meet, TeBeest came in 12th at 16:20.6, Yusuf was 19th with a time of 15:55.6 and the Willmar girls were third.

Willmar and LQPV/DB open its seasons next Monday with the Cardinals at Moorhead and LQPV/DB at Morris. Montevideo starts out Sept. 3 at the LQPV/DB Invite.

Two Ridgewater volleyball players honored by MCAC

Ridgewater College sophomores Kaitlyn Sterner and Lexie Skoglund were named MCAC Southern Division Athletes of the Week on Monday.

Sterner was honored as the top setter (10.6 assists per set) and Skoglund was the division’s top defensive player (team-high 65 digs) as Ridgewater won three of four matches over the weekend at its season-opening tournament.

Rockets re-sign veteran guard Terry

The Houston Rockets re-signed guard Jason Terry on Monday.

Terry played in 77 games for the Rockets last season, averaging 7.0 points, 1.9 assists and 1.6 rebounds in 21.3 minutes per game.

In 17 playoff games, he averaged 9.2 points, 2.8 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 28.6 minutes per game.

Terry, 37, has averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 assists and 2.5 rebounds in 1,213 games (668 starts) with the Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, Brooklyn Nets and Houston Rockets.
