The Insider: Four Stingers voted to NWL All-Star Game

The Willmar Stingers will have four players and their managerial staff, led by Drew Saberhagen, participating in this year's Northwoods League All-Star Game in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.

The Willmar Stingers will have four players and their managerial staff, led by Drew Saberhagen, participating in this year’s Northwoods League All-Star Game in Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.

Lead-off hitter Dan Motl, outfielder Storm Wilson, relief pitcher Dakota Belter and closer Brady Anderson were named to the North Division team from the first-half champions, the league announced Monday. The game is July 21 at 7:05 p.m.

Motl is hitting .345 - the league’s fourth-highest average - has scored 36 runs and drawn 29 walks in 41 games, Wilson is hitting .309 and has 19 RBIs and 18 stolen bases  - the league’s fourth-highest total - Belter is 5-0 with an ERA of in 13 appearances, and Anderson has a league-high 11 saves with an ERA of 1.84.

Wild sign first-round draft pick to 3-year deal

The Minnesota Wild signed first-round draft pick Joel Eriksson Ek to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Eriksson Ek, 18, spent last season playing professionally in Sweden. Plans are for him to return to Sweden for the 2015-16 season.

The Wild selected him 20th overall in June’s draft.

“We’re excited to officially have Joel under contract,” Flahr said in a statement. “He’s a top young player with an exciting package of size, skill, hockey sense and character. We are committed to working with him in the development process and look forward to seeing him in a Wild uniform in the near future.”

Special Olympics events Saturday in Olivia

The Olivia Law Enforcement Special Olympics Torch Run is Saturday at Dirks Park in Olivia.

Online registration for the race is currently open. Same-day registration is 7 a.m. at Dirks Park. The walk/run begins at 7:30 a.m.

Following the 5K, Special Olympics Minnesota athletes will compete in a Bocce Ball tournament at Dirks Park at 9 a.m.  

 This family friendly fun run helps provide more than 8,100 Special Olympics Minnesota athletes across the state with year-round sports training.

Six win titles at Marv Meyer race

Three men and three women claimed distance championships at the Marv Meyer Fun Run on Saturday in Morris.

Connor Siegel won the 2,000-meters men’s race, Steven Sarlette won at 5,000 and Ryan Gray won the 10,000.

Alexis Staples placed first at 2,000, Britt Rose won the 5,000 and Alexis Woodke was the 10,000 champion.

Rudningen nets ace at Little Crow

Dean Rudningen of New London shot a hole-in-one Sunday at Little Crow Country Club.

Rudningen aced the 115-yard No. 5 hole on the Pines course using a 5-wood.
