Federer plays today for spot in Open quarters
Roger Federer will get to break out his trademark all-black outfit again on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court at the U.S. Open today.
The 32-year-old Swiss, five times the champion in New York, takes on Spain’s 17th seed Roberto Bautista Agut for a place in the quarter-finals, having won 24 of his 25 matches under the lights at Flushing Meadows.
His only loss came against Tomas Berdych in the fourth round two years ago but Federer said Bautista Agut deserves his absolute respect.
In the women’s event, Caroline Wozniacki will be hoping to build on her win over Maria Sharapova in the previous round by taking out Italy’s Sara Errani in the last eight.
In her first grand slam quarter-final for more than two years, Wozniacki said she was enjoying being back on the big stage.
Sam not among Rams’ practice squad signees
The St. Louis Rams announced the signing of 10 players to their practice squad on Monday, and defensive end Michael Sam was not among them.
The absence of Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, brings him a little bit closer to being a man without a team this season.
He was waived by the Rams on Saturday, and no team picked him up off waivers. His chances of being employed by the NFL this year decreased further when the Rams did not sign him to the practice squad.
The Rams, who host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, made one other important move on Monday, claiming quarterback Case Keenum on waivers from Houston. The Rams have been looking for quarterback help since starter Sam Bradford suffered a season-ending ACL injury against Cleveland on Aug. 24.
U.S. overcomes slow start, thumps Turkey
A sluggish United States needed a strong final quarter to overpower Turkey 98-77 in the basketball World Cup on Sunday.
With the scores tied 59-59 late in the third quarter, the Americans moved up a gear and pulled away in the final 10 minutes with a series of fast breaks, long-range shots and entertaining slam-dunks.
Denver Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried led the U.S. with 22 points and eight rebounds,
