The St. Louis Rams reduced their roster by 17 players on Friday and defensive end Michael Sam was not among those who were cut.
Among the Rams’ cuts were defensive linemen Kourtnei Brown and Deantre Harlan, sixth-round quarterback Garrett Gilbert and seventh-round tackle Mitchell Van Dyk.
Sam, the NFL’s first openly gay player, had six tackles on Thursday night in the Rams’ 14-13 loss to the Miami Dolphins in the preseason finale. He is competing with rookie Ethan Westbrooks for one of the final roster spots.
The Rams still have to cut five more players before Saturday’s 3 p.m. deadline to reach the 53-man roster limit.
