The Insider: Willmar hockey staying home for first round of 3A Tourney

The field for the Section 3A boys hockey tournament was seeded Wednesday and the Willmar Cardinals received the No. 7 seed and a home game for the first round.

The field for the Section 3A boys hockey tournament was seeded Wednesday and the Willmar Cardinals received the No. 7 seed and a home game for the first round.

Willmar will host No. 10 Morris/Benson Area on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. The winner will play at No. 2 Litchfield/Dassel-Cokato in the quarterfinals next Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals and MBA played earlier in the season with Willmar winning 5-0 on Dec. 3 at the Willmar Civic Center.

The Cardinals are 8-17 and MBA is 2-20. Luverne (19-5) is the No. 1 seed.

Two Cardinals honored by CLC

Willmar senior Lexi Orlowski and sophomore Clay Carlson were named Central Lakes Conference Performers of the Week for their respective sports on Monday.

Orlowski was the conference’s top defender for girls basketball by collecting 21 rebounds and 10 blocks in two games last week.

Carlson was the top wrestler after defeating the 2015 Class AAA 113-pound champion Rylee Molitor of Sartell at 126 and Dallas Hooper of St. Cloud Tech at 132 last week. Carlson is currently the No. 3-ranked Class AAA wrestler in the 126-pound weight class.

Rose Jackson moves up on Bison all-time list

Willmar High School graduate and North Dakota State University junior Rose Jackson posted one of the top pentathlon scores in the school’s women’s track and field school history recently.

Jackson scored 3,777 points in the pentathlon for third place at the Jack Johnson Classic at the University of Minnesota on Jan. 29. The score is the third-highest in the NDSU record books. She stands behind only All-Americans Whitney Carlson and Heather Zander in NDSU indoor history.

Jackson recorded personal-best marks in the 60-meter hurdles (9.18 seconds) and shot put (41-04.50) to surpass her previous top pentathlon score by 109 points.

Last Friday at the Air Force Challenge in Colorado Springs, Colo., Jackson competed in the 200 meters (fourth place, 25.30) and the long jump (sixth, 18-03-3/4).
