WILLMAR - A tight game blew up on the Willmar boys hockey team early in the third period on Monday.
Alexandria, nursing a one-goal lead through two periods, scored three times in the first two minutes of the third period and went on to a 7-2 win at the Willmar Civic Center.
The Cardinals will be back on the ice tonight, playing at Redwood Valley at 7:15 p.m. in Redwood Falls.
On Monday, Ian Carruthers took a feed from Avery Smith and opened the scoring at 11:51 of the first and Willmar took that lead into the break.
Alexandria countered in the second when Mack Strong scored a goal at 9:16 on an assist from Ben Doherty, and the pair switched roles for another tally at 5:09 for a 2-1 lead.

But the game got away from Willmar early in the third.
Doherty and Strong teamed up again for a power play goal 30 seconds into the third, and Doherty capped his hat trick with another goal less than a minute later. Jack Powell potted Alexandria's third goal of the period at 14:52.
Carruthers scored his second goal at 11:22.
