ALEXANDRIA - The Willmar boys' basketball team held the lead at halftime on the road against highly-ranked Alexandria on Saturday, but the home team flew away in the second half to win 72-53 a Central Lakes Conference battle of the Cardinals.
Spencer Hockert scored 21 points to lead Alexandria, which improved to 7-2 on the season, while Noah Slagter led all Willmar players with 14 points. Drey Dirksen chipped in 12 points for Willmar, as well.
Willmar shot 35.3 percent (18-for-51) from the field, compared to the red-hot 54.3 percent shooting (31-for-57) for Alexandria.
Next up for Willmar is a trip to face Big Lake on Tuesday evening.

Camden Arndt led the way with 25 points and 13 rebounds as Morris/Chokio-Alberta defeated Pelican Rapids on Saturday.
The Tigers' Lukas Manska scored 12 points and had four steals, Tim Travis had 11 points and Jacob Zosel finished with 10 and four assists.
It was the second consecutive win for the Tigers, who play at Breckenridge on Tuesday.
