Matt Gruber's solo homer puts Stars over Paynesville
PAYNESVILLE — Tied at 2-all going into the sixth inning, Matt Gruber hit a solo home run to lead off the frame, lifting Starbuck to a 5-2 County Line League win over Paynesville on Friday.
Matt, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base, also started the game for the Stars, going 4-1/3 innings. Darion Alexander threw the remaining 4-2/3 innings, striking out four in the win.
Andrew Toop was 3-for-4 for Starbuck while Mike Kragenbring, Mike Andreas and Jackson Hendrickson each had two hits. The Stars’ leadoff batter, Michael Gruber, led the game off with a solo homer.
Luke Johnson finished 2-for-4 with a run, an RBI and a stolen base for the host Pirates. Grady Fuchs was 2-for-5 at the plate and struck out nine over 7-1/3 innings while being pegged with the loss.

While Sacred Heart jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the top of the first inning, Milroy’s Matt Bauer blasted a three-run home run in the bottom half while the Yankees didn’t give up a run the rest of the way en route to a Corn Belt League home win.
Bauer finished the game with a team-high two hits.
Both of the Saints’ first-inning runs came on a two-run double that brought home Nate Hebrink and Jeremy Hinderks. Trent Novotny and Hebrink both finished with two hits in the loss.
Milroy’s Nathan Deutz struck out eight in a complete-game victory while Sacred Heart’s Jack Howard was hit with the loss after tossing six innings.

Despite a 13-strikeout performance from pitcher Owen Boerema, Litchfield’s offense struggled to generate runs, allowing Dassel-Cokato to secure the North Star League victory.
In the top of the sixth, Boerema helped his own cause by scoring on a single by Brady Smith.

Putting up 15 hits and scoring runs in seven innings, Bird Island powered its way to a home win over New Ulm.
Tyler Hebrink went 3-for-6 with a run and an RBI for the Bullfrogs while Trent Athmann finished 2-for-4 with three runs and two RBIs. Braeden Tersteeg came through with three hits, three runs and an RBI while Logan Swann, Shawn Dollerschell and Aiden Elfering each had two hits. Casey Lewandoski was credited with the win after tossing 5-2/3 innings.
