Twins extend contract for closer Perkins

The Minnesota Twins restructured the contract of closer Glen Perkins, who agreed to terms on a new four-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

The Minnesota Twins restructured the contract of closer Glen Perkins, who agreed to terms on a new four-year contract extension, the team announced Friday.

The new deal covers the 2014 through 2017 seasons.

Perkins had been under contract through the 2015 season before agreeing to the extension.

He will now earn $4.025 million in 2014, $4.65 million in 2015, $6.3 million in 2016 and $6.5 million in 2017. The deal also includes a $6.5 million club option for the 2018 season.

Perkins, 31, was 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA last season, when he recorded 36 saves in 40 save opportunities.

He was named to the All-Star Game in 2013 after he saved 21 games, with a 1.82 ERA in the first half of that season.
