LITCHFIELD- Critical mistakes were too much for Litchfield to overcome Friday, as the Dragons fell 30-19 to Class AAAA second-ranked Hutchinson in a battle of East Central South District football unbeatens.
After a losing a fumble on the game's first play, then going three-and-out on their next series, the Dragon offense came alive behind two long touchdown passes late in the first quarter.
After the Tigers took an 8-0 lead, Josh Prahl and Brandon Nelson connected for scores from 61 and 60 yards out on consecutive possessions, as Litchfield grabbed a 12-8 lead it would take into halftime.
Another opening play disaster put the Dragons behind again, as Isaiah Nelson broke free for a 68-yard touchdown run on the first play of the third quarter.
Litchfield answered again, going up 19-16 on a six-yard Logan Nelson touchdown run, but two quick responses put the Tigers up for good.
Lane Glaser and Maguire Peterson, who hooked up for a 32-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, connected again, this time from 33-yards out to put Hutchinson back ahead.
The Tiger passing game was far more prolific than it had been all year. Glaser threw for 137 on 18 attempts after throwing just 38 times in the first five games.
Perhaps the biggest blow to Litchfield's morale came on the possession following Petersen's second touchdown catch.
After driving to the Dragon 47, an errant snap went over the head of Prahl. After two different players were unable to corral the loose ball, it rolled all the way to the 15 before Hutchinson recovered.
Two plays later, the lead was stretched to 30-19 on a five-yard Brooks Telecky run.
Dragon Coach Jim Jackman was happy with his team's effort, but knew a win would be hard to come by with so many errors.
"A couple times we shot ourselves in the foot," he said ."We had a couple of turnovers and a couple of penalties you just can't have. We've got to make the play that are there to make and we just fell short in a couple spots."
Though disappointed with the final, Jackman isn't worried about his team's ability to recover from its first loss.
"Win or lose, this is going to make us a better team," he said. "It's going to show us how good we are because we are a good team, but we've got to do better at limiting mistakes.
The Dragons travel to Annandale for the Battle For The Paddle at 7 p.m. next Friday.
