VFW Baseball: Willmar teams sweep Montevideo

VFW2 opens with a one-run win; VFW1 racks up 10 runs

MONTEVIDEO — Behind a shutout from Chase Birchard, the Willmar VFW2 baseball team came away with a 1-0 road victory against Montevideo on Tuesday.

Birchard allowed four hits and a walk with nine strikeouts. He closed the game by fanning Isaac Moravetz, Fox Huber and Ethan Moravetz in order.

The Cardinals scored their lone run in the top of the seventh. Kadin Brabender smacked a one-out triple to left. One batter later, he crossed the plate thanks to a Jaydon Garnhardt sacrifice fly.

Jacob Streed, Dalton Adolphson and Kiko Lara each collected base hits for the visitors.

Despite being tagged with the loss, Brady Snell also went the distance. Striking out four Cardinals, he relinquished four hits without giving up a free base.

For the hosts, Bryson Malstrom was 1-for-1 with a walk.

Already leading 4-0 through four innings, Willmar VFW1 tacked on six runs in the fifth, putting the mercy rule into effect in a 10-0 five-inning win over Montevideo on Tuesday night.

Carter Schow went 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs while both Sam Etterman and Jackson Sportel had two runs in the Willmar victory. On the mound, Sam Raitz pitched all five innings in the win, striking out seven.

Colby Buseman and Cade Weber each had a hit for Montevideo. Jackson Snell was hit with the loss after four innings of work.
