WILLMAR - The Willmar boys soccer team eased into the second round but they certainly expended some energy scoring goals in a 15-0 victory over the International School of Minnesota to open the Section 6A playoffs on Tuesday at the Kennedy Field.
“It was great to get a lot of kids in,” said Willmar head coach Jeff Winter. “Josh Curtis got his first varsity minutes and his first varsity goal. Some guys that don’t see a lot of time were able to play a lot.”
The Cardinal offense produced at a blazing pace, twice scoring goals within the same minute.
David Gomez finished with four goals and three assists, and Diego Millan scored twice and assisted on two.
Ricardo Contreras had a goal and three assists.
“When a three-seed (Willmar) is playing a 14 seed, the team can play at the level of the other team,” Winter said. “But we came out right away and got it going, and we came out of the game with no injuries.”
Willmar plays next against Southwest Christian Stars, of Chaska, ;in the 6A quarterfinals, at 4 p.m. Thursday in Willmar.
