Volleyball: Cards get back on winning track

BRAINERD -- The Willmar volleyball team shook off Tuesday's loss to Rocori and a long bus ride to Brainerd to dispatch the Warriors in four games in a Central Lakes Conference match on Thursday.

BRAINERD - The Willmar volleyball team shook off Tuesday's loss to Rocori and a long bus ride to Brainerd to dispatch the Warriors in four games in a Central Lakes Conference match on Thursday.

The Cardinals, tied after two games, won the third set handily and held off a Brainerd comeback attempt in the fourth.

The Cardinals won 25-10, 24-26, 25-12 and 25-21.

"We came in ready to play," said Cardinals head coach Traci Grussing. "We started well, and obviously it was up and down, but Cami (Sletta) had a good night and (Hannah) Kobienia came in the last two sets and was a spark."

Sletta finished with 20 kills, a block, an ace serve and 10 digs. Kobienia had three kills and three ace blocks.

Carly Wedel played a strong overall game, with 15 kills, three ace blocks and 11 digs.

Esther Grussing had 44 set assists and three kills and Heidi Sellman had six kills, three service aces, a block and five digs.

Staci Banks served four aces and had five digs, and Addie Erickson served two aces and led the Cardinals with 22 digs.

The Cardinals play host to an eight-team invitational with New London-Spicer, Benson, BBE, Central Minnesota Christian School, RCW, Lakeview and Albany on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. at the Willmar High School.
