CLARA CITY — Playing in its eighth match of 2020, Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg faced an opponent on Monday that has only competed once this season.

MACCRAY returned to the floor for the first time since Oct. 8 after having its season halted due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests at the school.

In what was a tight five-set match, KMS may have benefitted from those extra contests. The Fighting Saints earned a 3-2 victory during a Camden Conference match from MACCRAY High School.

The set scores were 24-26, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 and 15-13.

Grace Collins led KMS with 36 assists and 23 digs. Haile Nichols paced the squad with 35 digs. Lauren Krieger added a team-high 14 kills and 23 digs. Maret Gjerde chipped in 13 kills and 19 digs.

For the home team, Sydney Thein put up 29 digs, 21 kills and 17 assists. Ella Bourne had a match-best 37 digs.

Midway through the first set, Makenna Kelly put the visitors up 13-6 with an ace. However, on three separate occasions, the Wolverines tied the set. A poor KMS serve knotted the score at 24-24 before a kill from Kylee Kimpling and an errant Fighting Saints attack into the net gave the home team a 1-0 lead.

Capped by back-to-back Krieger ace serves, KMS enjoyed a 20-14 cushion in the second set before MACCRAY again rallied. An ace serve from Jordan Thein closed the Wolverines deficit to 21-20, but the Fighting Saints finished the set with a 4-0 run. Shakira Olson closed the set with a kill.

Winning two of the last three sets, KMS captured its first win at MACCRAY since 2014.

KMS next plays at 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Lac qui Parle Valley. MACCRAY faces Renville County West at 7:15 p.m. Thursday in Clara City.
