LITCHFIELD — A year removed from one of the best seasons in school history, New London-Spicer volleyball started the 2020 season strong with a sweep of Wright County Conference rival Litchfield.

The Wildcats won by scores of 25-17, 25-20, 25-20.

Kendra Bagley was NLS’ top attacker with 15 kills along with 15 digs. Aleah Zieske came up with 10 kills, four ace serves and seven digs. Nyla Johnson tallied 34 set assists.

For the Dragons, Sydney McCann led the offense with eight kills to go with 10 digs and two ace serves. Kristin Foley had 19 set assists and 12 digs, both team highs.

Heading into Thursday’s match, Litchfield was expecting a gym with just players, coaches, essential personnel and cardboard cutouts from family members lining up the far end of the Dragons’ Lair.

Just before 10 a.m., things got a lot busier for activities director Justin Brown.

“Around 9:50 a.m., I was meeting with my principal when I got an email from Jeff Peterson (the activities director) at Mound-Westonka saying, ‘You see this?’” Brown said, referring to the Minnesota Department of Education’s decision to allow spectators at indoor events. “Right after that, I got about 30 emails.”

Brown continued, “We had a MSHSL meeting to go through the guidelines, then we had a Wright County AD meeting at noon. I talked to (NLS activities director John) Vraa and we decided we’re going to do this and we sent that out around 12:30, 1 p.m. … Before, we didn’t even think parents would be allowed. They’re just so thankful we were able to put this together in a short amount of time.”

The Wildcats are back on the road Monday to play Rockford. The Dragons will host Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Tuesday.
