Volleyball: Willmar downs Alexandria in three

WILLMAR -- The Willmar volleyball team battled with Alexandria through the first two sets but sent its Central Lakes Conference counterpart packing in the third to advance in the Section 8AAA playoffs on Friday at Willmar High School.

WILLMAR - The Willmar volleyball team battled with Alexandria through the first two sets but sent its Central Lakes Conference counterpart packing in the third to advance in the Section 8AAA playoffs on Friday at Willmar High School.

Willmar won 25-20, 25-20 and 25-12.

Willmar advanced to play Sauk Rapids at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Willmar.

The Cardinals' Sydney Olson and Grace Marti both finished with 10 kills, Abby Teisinger had seven kills and Carly Wedel and Caitlin Ogdahl both had five.

Ogdahl also had four ace serves and 22 digs. Wedel had 35 set assists, five kills, a block and nine digs.

Tenth-ranked and top-seeded Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa made short work of No. 4 seed Kimball on Friday with a three-set win, 25-13, 25-7, 25-14.

Karsee Kampsen finished the night with 36 set assists, with the bulk going to Brittany Berge and her 17 kills. Ally Gruber had nine kills and eight digs, and Emily Kern helped keep the ball off the court with a Jaguar-best 12 digs.

On Tuesday, Oct. 30, BBE heads to Long Prairie to face second-seeded Osakis, which advanced with a five-set win over Browerville on Friday.

Benson pulled off the upset over KMS to move on in the Section 5A playoffs on Friday in Kerkhoven.

The Braves, beaten soundly in the first two sets, rallied to take the final three games, including a 16-14 victory in the deciding fifth set.

Claire Ricard led Benson with 15 kills and a pair of solo blocks, and Mariah Ahrndt had eight kills, served three aces, had three blocks and 18 digs.

Ahrndt had 16 set assists and Ellie Moesenthin had 19.

KMS' Lydia Wagner had 12 kills and Haylee Johnson had 10. The Saints had 13 ace serves, with Hallie Nichols leading with five and Katie Krieger had four.

Mallory Rudningen had 32 set assists and 16 digs, and Krieger had 36 digs.

Fifth-seeded Canby rebounded from a tight first-set loss to win the next three for a Section 3A-North road win over fourth-seeded MACCRAY in the section quarterfinals on Friday.

Piper Asche and Danni Burns both had double-digit kills with 14 and 13, respectively.

Sydney Thein finished with 34 set assists, and Kate Hultgren came up with 18 digs and had three of the team's 10 ace serves.

With a four-set victory, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton ended Yellow Medicine East's 17-game win streak and its season in the Section 3A-East quarterfinals Friday, 19-25, 25-20, 25-10, 25-15.

Meeghen Dahlager had a team-best 17 kills along with 14 digs for the Sting while fellow senior middle hitter Mackenzie Dyrdahl finished with eight kills, two ace serves, three blocks and 14 digs. Madison Hinz came up with 25 set assists and Alli Steffen scooped up 18 digs in the loss.
