PRINSBURG — While the night wasn’t perfect in front of its home crowd, Central Minnesota Christian was better team in its match against Yellow Medicine East, as the Bluejays defeated the Sting 25-20, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20 on Thursday from Central Minnesota Christian School.

On the back of a 8-1 surge capped by a kill from sophomore rear hitter Alexis Smith, YME jumped out to a 12-9 advantage in the initial set before the hosts took control. Scoring the next seven points, CMCS regained the lead after senior middle hitter Emma Van Dyken and sophomore outside hitter Molly Mulder elevated for a block. Later, junior libero Torri Muzik added to the momentum, as she delivered an ace along with a highlight dig that found an opening on the Sting’s side of the court. The hosts would gain as much as an eight-point cushion before closing out the first frame.

In the second set, the home team jumped out to a 10-3 before Yellow Medicine East head coach Alyssa Johnson signaled for her third timeout of night.

Muzik had four aces while senior outside hitter Elli Stoel had five, but the Bluejays struggled with their serve to the tune of 16 errors. Those mishaps were instrumental in the Sting’s lone victory in set three.

Central Minnesota Christian closed out in the final set thanks to a diverse offense. Five players produced six or kills, led by sophomore outside hitter Molly Mulder, who had 12.

“I thought we did a really good job in serve receive,” Bluejays head coach Jill Haan said. “We were able to keep our setter on the net and our kills were spread out pretty evenly.”

Sophomore setter Coco Duininck collected 31 assists. Van Dyken and Mulder each had five blocks while senior outside hitter Elli Stoel paced the Bluejays with 17 digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Yansi Flores was strong in defeat, producing 10 kills, 11 digs, four blocks and two aces.

On the road for its third consecutive match, Willmar captured its third consecutive sweep, as the Cardinals defeated Rocori on Thursday night from Cold Spring.

Willmar earned a narrow 25-23 victory in the first set before taking the match with a 25-19 win in the second set and a 25-18 triumph in the third.

Sophomore Lydia Larson set the pace for the Cardinals, as she racked up 38 assists. Outside hitters Bailey Olson, Sydney Schnichels and Sophie Kobienia were on the receiving end of many of Larson’s passes. Olson led the team with 13 kills, while Schnichels and Kobienia chipped in with 11 and 10, respectively.

Olson also had 15 digs, second behind junior libero Abby Stark, who dug out 21 balls.

The Cardinals will next compete in the Shakopee Invitational on Saturday before returning home for a match against Brainerd on Tuesday.
