NEW LONDON — The New London-Spicer volleyball team played its second to last match of the season and looked strong doing so.

The Wildcats beat Dassel-Cokato 25-23, 25-19, 25-19 in a Wright County Conference match Thursday night.

NLS concludes the season with a home match Friday against Litchfield that was scheduled on Thursday. It’s the last match of the year because of restrictions handed down by the governor on Wednesday night because of the coronavirus pandemic.

New London-Spicer seniors Kendra Bagley, outside hitter, left, and Mya Krause, libero, cheer after scoring a point during Thursday's match against Dassel-Cokato at New London-Spicer High School in New London.

Minneota 3,

Willmar 1

In a matchup of unbeaten teams, host Minneota downed Willmar 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18.

The Vikings (13-0), top-ranked in Class A, used their strong outside game and excellent defense to hand Willmar (11-1) its first loss of the season.

“The difference in the game was mental,” Willmar head coach Traci Grussing said. “Minneota played like they normally do and competed.

“And we played nervous.”

Grussing complimented the Vikings’ play.

“They take care of the ball,” Grussing said. “Their two outsides are phenomenal. They pass every ball well, they did every ball. And their defense is super good.”

Senior right-side hitter Sophie Kobienia had 17 kills for the Cardinals. Sophomore outside hitter Sydney Schnichels had 15 kills and senior outside hitter Bailey Olson contributed 11. Grussing also said that setter Lydia Larson stood out.

“She got the ball to the hitters,” Grussing said. “We struggled in our passing game, so she was running all over the court.”

Willmar, which is receiving votes in the Class AAA state poll, concludes the season at 7 p.m. Friday at Minnetonka.
