NEW LONDON -- The New London-Spicer Wildcats began defense of their Class AAA state title with a 20-0 victory over St. Cloud Cathedral in the Section 6AAA quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Ronnie Johnson's 36-yard run was followed by Shawn Hatle-stad's conversion run in the first quarter for an 8-0 halftime lead.
Jayme Moten found Brandon Zylstra twice for scores in the second half on plays that covered six and 28 yards.
The Wildcats' defense did the rest. The Crusaders (4-5) managed just 92 yards in 39 rushes, a 2.3 yard average per snap. The passing game added 28 yards for 120 yards of total offense.
Moten completed 6-of-8 passes for 71 yards, five of those to Zylstra for 69 yards.
