Down 3-0 after two periods, Willmar could not mount a comeback against Sartell/Sauk Rapids as the Cardinals took their first loss of the season Tuesday against the Central Lakes Conference rival Storm’N Sabres at Bernick’s Arena in Sartell.
Sartell/Sauk Rapids’ Anna Orth scored the first goal of the game at the 6-minute mark of the opening period. Then, Nora Sauer and Erika Johnson added a pair of second-period goals for the Storm’N Sabres.
At 10:17 of the third, Willmar finally got on the board on a Mya Monson goal. Bailey Olson was credited with an assist on the play.
In net, Cardinals goaltender Bryton Carlson stopped 29 of 32 shots.
Willmar (6-1-1) will try to get back in the win column Thursday at Alexandria.
