The Willmar Legion baseball team will be host of the Division 1, Zone 15 Sub-State tournament on Wednesday through Saturday.

Willmar, the No. 6 seed, opens the double-elimination tournament against No. 3 Hutchinson at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Bill Taunton Stadium.

In Wednesday's other first-round games at Taunton, No. 2 Maple Plain plays No. 7 Cold Spring at 10 a.m., No. 4 Marshall plays No. 5 Delano at 4 p.m., and at 7 p.m. top-seed Waconia plays No. 8 Lester Prairie, which defeated St. Joseph in a play-in game.

Wednesday's winning teams play at 9:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Thursday at Taunton Stadium.

First-round losing teams play at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday at Swansson Orange.

Losers' bracket games continue at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursday, and at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Friday at Swansson.

The winners' bracket final is 10 a.m. Friday. The championship game is 10 a.m. Saturday with a second game, if needed, starting 20 minutes after the first game.

Willmar 1 edges Paynesville

Willmar VFW I took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning and that proved to be enough for the victory over Paynesville on Monday.

Post 1639 used three pitchers to piece together a one-run effort, allowing seven hits as a whole. Kaden Kesler-Gross was the starter and struck out three in five innings of work. Jack Baumgart and Jayden Dierenfeld split the final two innings.

Spencer Emholte settled in after allowing two runs in the first inning and ended up going the distance.
