WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals just aren't content playing only three periods of hockey.

In their fourth clash in the last five games requiring an extra period, the Cardinals ended up tying the Sartell Sabres 6-6 after a wild six-goal third period.

"The boys were tired and it showed in the first two periods," said Willmar coach Dan Tollefson.

Willmar's last lost was 3-0 to Sartell on Dec. 23. Since then, the Cardinals (4-2-3, 7-5-3) have gone 6-0-3.

Willmar got off to a quick start with goals from Gabe Amon and Liam Johnston to take a 2-0 lead with 11:18 left in the first period.

But Sartell (6-3-1, 9-6-1) came back in the second and tied it at 3 with under two minutes remaining until the final intermission.

Then the action exploded.

"Each team had their chances and they buried them. A lot of times you see a lot of grinding it out," said Tollefson.

Willmar would score and then Sartell would answer, three times. Hunter Schneider scored twice and Tyler Bredeson added the other. The Sabres' Andrew Deters scored on a power play at the 13:45 mark to tie the game.

In the overtime, however, the action ground to a near halt.

Getting a win would have given the Cardinals a boost in the Section 6A standings, but Tollefson said they'll have to settle for a tie.

"We've been gaining some ground in the section. It wasn't our greatest game of the year, but we'll take it," he said.
