WILLMAR — Hitting the mat for the first time this season, the Willmar wrestling team managed to dominate Friday.
With eight wrestlers taking first in their respective weight classes, the Cardinals won the Willmar Cardinal Classic.
Willmar, which is ranked 11th in the latest Class AAA poll, finished with 238.5 points. Lakeville South, which is in the Lean and Mean team rankings, was second with 182.5. Springfield (86.5), Sauk Centre/Melrose (83), Ortonville (68) and Quad County (66) rounded out the field.
Taking first place for the Cardinals were: Conlan Carlson (106 pounds); Ivan Ciriaco-Mares (113); Steven Cruze (120); Caden Carlson (132); Jack Roehl (138); Ethan Roux (182); Kaden Streed (195); and Mason Swanson (220). Josh Miley (145), Jonas Anez (160) and Joe Kallevig (170) were runners-up at their respective weights.
Tarrick Rupp had Quad County’s best finish, taking second at 106. Hunter Wilke (113), Abel Chaparro (138) and Jack Howard (170) each placed third.

The Cardinals return to action on Thursday for a quadrangular at Brainerd. Bemidji and Alexandria also are in the field and will be the only time Willmar will squad off with the Lumberjacks in a battle of Section 8AAA favorites.
