WILLMAR -- Willmar senior Alissa Tinklenberg won the 500 freestyle (5:23.15) and the 100 backstroke (1:00.91) on Thursday during the Section 3A preliminaries in the Cardinals' own pool.

Both times are well under the state cut, though she will need to make it official on Saturday. The concluding day starts at 11 a.m. with the diving preliminaries, followed by the swimming championship and consolation heats and the diving finals at 3 p.m.

The Cardinals' 200 medley relay of Tinklenberg, Emily Zondervan, Anna Fuglestad and Aleasha Blokzyl shaved three seconds from their seed time to go under the state cut.

Willmar's 400 freestyle relay is fourth, but needs a huge drop of over three seconds to get to the state cut. The 200 free relay needs 2.4 seconds, but has half the distance to do it.

Litchfield's medley relay got under the state cut with Kjerstin Meyer, Hannah Walsh, Marissa Warren and Kaytlin Borg.

Warren also qualified for the championship heat in both the individual medley and butterly. Hutchinson junior Audrey Kumm, the defending Class A champion in both, won both those events by a healthy margin each time.

Willmar's Cassie Yoakum (backstroke) and Zondervan (breaststroke) will both swim in the championship heats on Saturday.
