SAUK RAPIDS — This wasn’t what Ethan Roux and the rest of his teammates on the Willmar wrestling team wanted.
After falling short to Bemidji last year, this was the hoped-for moment of redemption.
Instead, Bemidji won its second straight Section 8AAA title Friday night at Sauk Rapids-Rice High School.
The Lumberjacks beat Willmar 41-20 to end a long day of wrestling.
“It’s just tough sometimes,” said Roux, a senior 170-pounder. “You have to step up and be prepared.
“We have three seventh-graders in our lineup. It’s tough.”
The entire team tournament was conducted Friday. First-round matches, including a wrestle-in, originally were to be scheduled Wednesday. But inclement weather forced postponement.
Everyone then wrestled Friday.
“At this point, you’ve got to look past it and get over it,” Roux said. “You’ve got to focus on your individual goals and what you need to do now.
“You can’t really change it.”
The Cardinals beat Moorhead 56-9 in the quarterfinals, then knocked off fourth-seeded St. Cloud Tech 34-27 in the semifinals.
Bemidji, meanwhile, beat Sauk Rapids 47-15 in the quarterfinals and knocked off Brainerd 39-20 in the semifinals.
Willmar head coach Ed Oehlers said there was no individual to blame for the Bemidji loss. It’s a team sport. The Cardinals lost extra points all over the lineup, he said. There were matches his squad hoped would go the other way.
“A lot of guys battled hard,” Oehlers said. “I’m proud of them.
“I’m proud of how we battled the first two duals and in the third dual, too.
“We have a young team and we have much to be proud of in finishing runner-up in our section. The future’s bright.”
Roux and seniors Jack Roehl (132) and Josh Miley (138) saw their dual careers end.
The Cardinals now focus for the individual tournament at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 22, at Willmar.
