A stalk of industrial hemp grown this year on a Kandiyohi County Farm was passed around during an informational meeting last week in Spicer about growing and processing industrial hemp. The Ag and Renewable Energy Committee, which is part of the Kandiyohi County and City of Willmar Economic Development Committee, intends to do a feasibility study to explore market possibilities for processing the harvested crop.

A variety of food, oil, lotions and cosmetics can be made from hemp, and industrial hemp is gaining ground in Minnesota. In 2016 there were 47 acres of hemp planted on seven farms in the state. This year there are 2,100 acres of hemp planted on 42 farms.
