The Milan Bridge will be replaced in 2019 by an open, concrete structure. Concerns about the height and width restrictions of the steel truss structure led to the Minnesota Department of Transportation seeking authority to replace, rather than rehabilitate, the 1938 bridge.

The Duluth Transit Authority parked its fleet of seven electric buses in late November to address issues with hill braking and heat. The buses were introduced in October, and were purchased via federal grant as a way of testing electric technology in Duluth's cold weather and hilly streets.
