Students at the Montevideo High School are filling 20,000 sandbags Tuesday, March 26, 2019, in preparation of the community’s flood fight. The sandbags will be used to build up the levee along the Minnesota River where waters are projected to reach major flood stage by week’s end.

An area 1 mile east of Dawson is flooded over right up to the railroad crossing as of 6 p.m. Monday as waters from the Lac qui Parle River continue to rise.

Ice and debris float down the Minnesota River at Montevideo on Sunday afternoon below the U.S. Highway 212 bridge . The river was predicted to top flood stage of 14 feet overnight. Major flooding at 17.5 feet and above is expected sometime between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital CEO Brian Lovdahl, shown here in a file photo, told the Chippewa County Board of Commissioners on Tuesday that as of Aug. 1, the system will be known as Chippewa County Montevideo Health. The County Board and the Montevideo City Council each approved new bylaws this week for the health system jointly owned by the city and county.
