Noreen Thomas and her family have seen more than their share of floods over the years in Minnesota's Kragnes Township. The Buffalo River sits adjacent to the farm, which is protected -- in part -- by a permanent ring dike. Major flooding requires several hundred sandbag and constant monitoring. The National Weather Service on Thursday warned there is an increased risk for spring flooding in the Minnesota River basin. There is a greater than 50 percent probability that the Minnesota River could reach major flood stage, including in Montevideo. Will snowplows be pushing liquid water when all of this snow melts, as in this Tribune file photo from 2011? The National Weather Service advises that the flood risk is elevated in the Upper Minnesota River basin due to the snowpack, frost depth and the wet fall conditions.

Snow and dangerous cold will be impacting the vast majority of the state, including Willmar and the surrounding region.  Several inches of snow may fall from Sunday afternoon to Monday morning. Temperatures are expected to be in the double digits below zero with even lower wind chills for Tuesday through Thursday.
