The National Flood Insurance Program rate map has small areas in Willmar listed as high-risk area for flooding, most of them along the lakes. The Willmar City Council has started the process to have the city participate in the program.

The Willmar City Council approved a resolution Monday that directs city staff to pursue the purchase of Block 25 property for a new city hall. Block 25 is located between Second and Third Street Streets Southwest, bordered by U.S. Highway 12 and Benson Avenue Southwest. The city already owns half the block as a city parking lot and will pursue the purchase of the Nelsen and Wodash properties that make up the rest of that block.

Block 25, the former location of Nelsen’s Laundry on Benson Avenue Southwest in downtown Willmar, is a prospective location for a new city hall. The Willmar City Council on Monday approved a resolution directing city staff to begin the process to possibly acquire property there. The city is interested in purchasing both the Nelsen Laundry property and the John Wodash properties in that block. Each is currently listed at $100,000.

A new four-season shelter at Robbins Island would allow year-round recreation opportunities at the park. A Legacy grant from the state carries a June 2020 deadline for project completion, and the city has not yet approved a design for the shelter.

The City Hall Task Force last week made its site recommendation for a new city hall – city-owned property adjacent to the Willmar Fire Station – and the matter was on the City Council agenda for possible action Monday night. The council delayed action pending a public input meeting Tuesday and moved consideration of the site to a special meeting April 29.
