A planned improvement project at Willmar's Northeast Water Treatment Plant was estimated to cost about $8.5 million and now looks like it will cost around $14 million. Willmar Municipal Utilities will go back to the drawing board to address ammonia levels at the plant.

A 3,200-ton coal pile sits Monday behind the Willmar Power Plant. The Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission agreed Monday with the staff recommendation to sell the remaining coal as it is no longer needed as a backup fuel source.

Excess steam is released Thursday from the Willmar Power Plant. There is a large amount of unused steam due to the district heat load dropping so significantly as that program winds down. For greater efficiency, Willmar Municipal Utilities will implement use of a mobile boiler later this summer.

While no decision has been made about the future of the power plant once the district heat system is shut down in 2020, Utilities General Manager John Harren said he hopes a decision is made before 2020. Options range from replacing the current generators in the plant with more efficient models to shutting the plant down completely.
