ASHBY -- Benson went 4-0 to win the six-team Ashby Invitational on Saturday. The Braves (11-4) defeated Eagle Valley 25-9, 25-19 and Ashbu 25-19, 25-17 in pool play to advance to the semifinals where they upeneded Henning 25-14, 25-12. Benson met Ashby again in the championship and again prevailed 25-13, 25-16. Emily Jensen recorded 19 kills and 13 ace serves in the four matches. Kelly Jepma added 13 kills and seven ace serves Annie Eklund 13 kills and six ace serves. Nikki Linn notched 46 set assists. Eklund and Jessica Ascheman has six ace blocks each.
Results Saturday LQPV Invite Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd went 3-0 at its home event, the sixth annual Colbey Ehlenz Memorial Invite. Junior Madeline Gail at 1-singles got her 100th career win in the first match defeating Sonnie Sellner 5-0, 5-0 (sets were shortened due to hour-long rain delay).
The Willmar Cardinals put their 3-0 record on the line tonight at Sartell in a Central Lakes Conference football game. Sartell is 2-1 coming off lopsided wins over Little Falls and Sauk Rapids. The Sabres beat Willmar 21-14 last season. Willmar is off to its best start since the 2000 season. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
Litchfield's John Spreiter shot a 74 to finish in sixth place at the Minnesota Golf Association's Mid-Amateur Championship at Rochester Golf & Country Club Thursday. Benson native Greg Peterson, who lives in Rochester, tied for eighth after shooting a 78, Josh Blackman of Mankato won the title with a three-day total of 217.
The Willmar Community Education and Recreation Department will be running women's and co-rec volleyball leagues, which will start near the end of October. The women's volleyball leagues, which include divisions for Power and Semi-Power teams, will start Oct. 27 and run through March 9, 2006. The co-rec league runs from Oct. 24, 2005-March 13, 2006. Kaafi Adeys, Willmar Cardinal junior, has been named Central Lakes Conference Performer of the Week in boys cross country. Adeys led Willmar to the team title at the 12-team Hutchinson Invitational with a first-place time of 16:31 for 5,000 meters.
BENSON -- The momentum swung in Benson's favor in the final game Thursday and the Braves edged Montevideo 25-16, 27-25, 10-25, 22-25, 15-12 in a West Central South Conference match. Montevideo (2-4, 7-6) led 11-10 in the fifth game before Kelly Jepma was at the service line when Benson (4-2, 7-4) rattled off four straight points. Nikki Linn then ended the match with a tip over the middle that found its way through the Montevideo defense. Emily Jensen paced a balanced Benson attack with 15 kills.
BROOTEN -- Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa stayed hot and whipped Eden Valley-Watkins 25-19, 25-18, 25-11 in a Central Minnesota Confrence match. The win was the 12th straight for the Jaguars (13-1) and 10th by sweep. April Hansen had 14 kills, Tiffany Gruber had seven and Katie Gruber six for BBE. Tiffany Gruber and Ashley Roelike had five ace serves each.
GLENWOOD -- Minnewaska Area won its fourth straight match Thursday, topping Paynesville 22-25, 25-23, 25-22, 17-25, 15-11 in a West Central North Conference marathon. Laura Tvrdik blasted down 18 kills and added 12 ace blocks and nine ace serves for the Lakers (2-5, 5-11).
