FARGO - When the snow on the ground has become substantial by the middle of January, there is always concern about spring flooding in the Red River Valley. However, so far this winter, the snow looks worse than it is. The estimated snow water equivalent of the snow pack across eastern North Dakota and northwestern Minnesota is mostly in the range of one to four inches, which is near average.
The winter has certainly been an active one, especially since Christmas, but the snow has mostly been cold weather snow, which tends to be light and airy and not so waterlogged. Given the active weather pattern, there is certainly a concern that a huge snowstorm or two during winter's second half could add significant water to the snow cover, and there is always the threat of heavy rain at the time of spring melting. However, the present snow pack is not a cause for great concern.
